Out-of-stock product SEO: keep, redirect or remove?
A stock change is not automatically a reason to delete a page. The right decision depends on whether the product returns, whether the page still helps buyers and whether a genuine replacement exists.
Scan your site free1. Separate temporary shortages from retirement
Ask the inventory owner whether the product is expected to return. Keep an internal record of that decision instead of promising a restock date you cannot confirm. A temporarily unavailable product can retain a useful working page with its current status clearly shown.
2. Make a retained page useful
Keep specifications, instructions and compatibility details available. Clearly show that purchasing is unavailable, and link relevant alternatives without implying they are identical. Offer a restock notification only if your store actually supports it and handles consent correctly.
3. Consider a redirect for a true replacement
A permanent redirect can make sense when a discontinued product has a genuinely equivalent successor. Check that the destination answers the original need. Sending every retired item to the homepage is confusing and may be treated as a soft 404.
4. Remove pages with no remaining purpose
If there is no replacement and the page no longer provides useful information, a proper 404 or 410 may be appropriate. Remove stale internal links and sitemap entries. Keep a helpful error page for shoppers, but preserve the correct HTTP response.
5. Keep availability consistent
Update visible stock status, product structured data and any merchant feed together. Recheck a sample after inventory updates. Trendifyn's broken-link checks can surface failed links in its bounded scan, but stock handling and redirects must be configured in your shop.
